What is Bid Whist and How to Play It

Bid whist is a card game for four players in two teams, who sit opposite each other. The game uses a standard 52 card deck plus 2 jokers, for a total of 54 cards. The objective is to score 7 or more points or force the other team to go negative 7 or more points. Points are earned by bidding for and winning tricks, which in this game are called books.

The Basics of Bid Whist

The game starts with each team at zero points, and the first player to get a diamond card becomes the first dealer. Cards are dealt one at a time, in a clockwise motion, until each player has 13 cards. The remaining cards make up the kitty and will be the first trick won by the winner of the bid. The last card dealt is revealed to all players, and its suit determines the trump suit for the round. The trump suit is the most powerful suit in the game, and can beat any other suit. The jokers are also trumps, with the red joker being the highest and the black joker being the second highest.

The Bidding Process

After the cards are dealt, each player may bid or pass, starting with the player to the dealer's left and proceeding clockwise. A bid must be better than the previous bid or no bid. No deals are passed. A bid consists of a number from 4 to 7, and a suffix "uptown", "downtown", or "no trump". The number indicates the number of books above 6 that the bidder's team will contract to win - for example a bid of 5 is a promise to win at least 11 books (6 + 5). As there are 13 books in all, 7 is the highest possible bid.

Uptown (or "high") means you intend to name a trump suit, and that high cards will win. Downtown (or "low") means that you intend to name a trump suit, and that low cards will win. No Trump means that there will be no trump, and that if you win the bidding you will then determine whether high or low cards will have preference.

To increase the bid, players must win more tricks or increase the difficulty of the game. The ranking for difficulty of game is as follows: No Trump (high), downtown, uptown. Meaning a bid of 3 uptown is beat by either saying 4 uptown or 3 downtown. If all players pass, the dealer must make a bid. The winner of the bid wins the kitty as the first trick. They must also make a second choice if the winning bid was No Trump (no trumps) they must decide whether to play it uptown or downtown. If the winning bid was uptown or downtown, they must decide the suit of the trump.

The Playing Phase

After bidding, the game may start. The player to the left of the dealer starts the playing phase by leading any card they wish. The other players must follow suit if they can, or play a trump card or any other card if they cannot. The player who plays the highest card of the suit led, or the highest trump card, wins the trick and leads the next one. If there is no trump, the player who plays the highest or lowest card of the suit led, depending on whether the game is uptown or downtown, wins the trick.

The round ends when all 13 tricks have been played. The team that won the bid must score at least as many points as they bid, or they will lose points instead. Points are scored as follows: one point for each book won above six, plus one point for winning the bid. For example, if a team bids 5 uptown and wins 12 books, they score 6 points (5 + 1). If they only win 10 books, they lose 5 points (-5). The team that did not win the bid scores one point for each book won above six, regardless of whether the other team made their bid or not. For example, if a team bids 5 uptown and wins 10 books, and the other team wins 3 books, the other team scores -2 points (3 - 6 + 1).

The game continues until one team reaches 7 or more points, or one team goes negative 7 or more points. The team with the higher score wins the game.
